小说
The Novel

Considered to have developed in the early eighteenth century, the English novel has grown to be one of Great Britain’s most important literary outputs. With an emphasis on realism and on character, this genre was fully established by the beginning of the nineteenth century. Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre which opens this section, is often seen as the first modern British novel. Two of Great Britain’s most widely read authors, Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, represent the popularity of novels and short stories which were published in periodicals, journals and affordable editions.

By the end of the nineteenth century the novel had further developed to encompass the fantastical and adventurous, paving the way for ever-more exciting stories in the twentieth century. On display are two stories by Ian Fleming featuring the technology-loving spy, James Bond. Testament to the enduring appeal of the characters shown in this section, each has featured in more than one film adaptation produced in the late twentieth or early twenty-first centuries.
