Poetry

Since at least the sixteenth century, English poetry has delighted and inspired global audiences. The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw the development of the Romantic Movement, whereby poetry inspired by nature, travel, and the gothic captured the imagination of audiences. Three poets most linked to the Romantic Movement are Lord Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. Their poetry, both short and epic, embodies key elements of Romanticism, including love, exploration and the supernatural. The impact of these poets and in particular their poems Don Juan, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and I wandered lonely as a cloud are such that they continue to be studied and performed, well into the twenty-first century.
