结语
Conclusion

The tradition of storytelling, through text, music and performance, is at the heart of this exhibition of over one hundred and nineteen manuscripts and books. British playwrights, composers, poets and novelists, spanning five centuries, are united by one common theme: their ability to weave a gripping narrative often populated by complex and dynamic characters. Similarly, the skill of each writer in crafting vivid scenes, provides rich landscapes against which their stories unfold.

The vibrancy of characters and narrative in these gems of English literature and music, captivated Chinese translators and audiences, leading to inspirational adaptations and editions in the Chinese language. The dissemination and popularity of English literature within China is evidence of both the brilliance of the original writing and quality of interpretation.

As the relationship between British writing and Chinese translation continues to develop, English literature can only benefit from further interpretation, reading and re-reading by wider Chinese audiences. Over the last century, the two-way dialogue between Chinese and British poetry, novels and music has evolved into a fertile arena for further exciting discoveries and collaborations, one which is symbolized through partnership between our two national libraries.
